He watched in disgust from the shadows. An elderly man held at knifepoint, every item of value ferreted from his body in exchange for the sparing of his life. Wallet, gold watch and chain, wedding band... The mugger laughed and drove the knife into the man's gut. The scent of spilt blood quickly found its way to his nose but he was so aghast and furious he barely registered it. Normally it was fine-- better even-- to wait until the criminal had put enough distance that the victim would no longer be in harm's way. The kind of heartlessness it took to kill him after he'd already cooperated, after he already had everything he could possibly get from him...
"That's enough!"
He stalked out into the moonlight, teeth bared. The mugger pulled back, held the knife defensively as though it would do him any good. The blade was common steel; he would have felt it if it contained silver.
"I won't forgive that kind of slaughter. If you can prey on the weak like that you have no right to complain when the tables are turned!"
The man turned and ran but it was futile to try to escape. As a vampire he was faster, nimbler, and stronger despite his smaller size. He closed in quickly and leapt to the man's shoulders, tackling him to the ground. He slashed wildly with the knife and managed to take a good slice out his arm. It stung, but the pain was already starting to fade as he dug his fangs into the man's neck.
The blood was foul, but made somewhat more palatable from the sweet infusion of fear through its flavor. His prey quieted under him, their blood pooling together on the ground beneath him. He drank in peace.
