It was another year and yet another transfer to a new school. All in the name of new experiences and learning new arts to round out his talent. This time, strangely, his father had picked him to attend some kind of school that had a lot of its resources geared towards tennis. The one sport that he had never really given much thought to. Well, if he could add martial arts to it, then he could do anything and he was going to damn well try and see if Anything Goes Tennis was going to become a thing.
Ranma wanders up to the courts and stands just outside of the fence as he watches the other students inside warming up. Transferring to a school when you're in your third year was a little tough when it came to earning your place in clubs but earning your place anywhere was something he definitely had experience in. And with his confidence, he was sure that he would rocket his way to the top of this club in no time.
Fuji is a couple of minutes late today thanks to a conversation with his music teacher about the influence of jazz that ran over. It doesn't particularly concern him that they've already started warming up, however, if his casual pace is any indication. He's already changed into his Regular uniform and has his bag slung over the shoulder. But he pauses seeing someone unfamiliar at the fence.
New faces watching the courts were far from unusual, but still merited a bit of caution. Sometimes, it was a student from another school who'd come to gather intel. The boy with the braided tail isn't wearing a local uniform, which makes him curious about who he is, where he's from, and whether he's a new student of their own school still waiting for his uniform to come in. He can already see that he's muscular-- probably strong, like Kawamura.
"Just visiting?" He asks, his tone light and amiable.
At the question, Ranma turns towards the voice. He sounded calm enough that he wasn't startled by the person coming up to him so he turns towards Fuji, one hand still on the fence. He gives him a once over quietly. This guy must be one of the special ones according to the uniform he was given. Not that Ranma was into uniforms. Ever since he's graduated out of elementary school he's been able to somehow avoid wearing the school uniform.
"I'm a new transfer." He grins towards Fuji, keeping his posture casual for the moment. "I was just having a look around at the clubs that are on offer. This one seems to be the most important one."
And obviously that meant this is where Ranma had to be to continue his training. "You're one of the...special guys, right?" He didn't really know any of the terminology but surely his meaning was clear enough.
Hearing that this is indeed a new transfer, Fuji's expression melts into a smile.
"I see. Welcome to Seishun Gakuen-- I'm Fuji Syusuke, third year. Tennis is one of the clubs we're most known for; we're always glad to see our membership grow."
The boy seems friendly, and either did some homework beforehand or has a good eye. He has an air of confidence about him, too, that Fuji likes. It was important to be confident in your own ability here. There were a lot of monsters on the tennis team.
He tips his head a bit at being called a 'special guy.'
"You mean a Regular? Yeah, I am. Why? Are you out to unseat one of us?" He asks with a hint of teasing. At the very least, he doesn't sound particularly worried about his own position.
Ranma has always been pretty good at telling who the greats were whenever he entered a new arena. And that's all tennis was, a new arena for him to train his skills. He's never played it before but he has no doubt he could make himself pretty good at it in a very short amount of time.
Well, that and if he could somehow turn it into martial arts tennis, he can win. As long as it's martial arts he was definitely sure he could win anything. "I think I could make it onto your regulars team by the end of this school term." Very arrogant but if you're going to play; then you're going to win. There was also a very bright spark of determination in his eyes.
Oh, right, and he really should introduce himself if he was going to be joining their team. "The name's Ranma. Ranma Saotome."
"Do you? I look forward to seeing that, Saotome. It sounds interesting." Who would he oust? Would he even? Fuji, for his part, is pretty comfortable about keeping his own place. He may not know Saotome's strength, but he knows the other Regulars', and it's unlikely that he'll be put in the same tryout block as Echizen; Ryuzaki-sensei wouldn't want the two strongest in the same one.
"I'm on my way to practice now. Why don't we introduce you to the coach?"
He wasn't going to pass on the opportunity to meet the one in charge. Work his way quickly to the top and show that he can be just as strong as the others that are already in the team. He wasn't going to be like the other lower level ones that seemed to be running around the court chasing balls.
That didn't look fun at all.
"Sounds great! I don't have any of my own equipment yet. I'll find a way to make it work. What's your coach like?"
"There are some spare rackets in the locker room," Fuji offered. "Although... you'll want to avoid the one with the loose gut." Echizen managed to make it sing, but he was a rare exception, and it just wouldn't be very sportsmanlike to not mention it.
He started walking closer to the court prep area, motioning with a tip of his head for Saotome to follow. "Ryuuzaki-sensei... mmh. She's strict, but she cares a lot about her people. She isn't the type to hold someone back, and she's always looking out for what's best for the students." A really great coach, all around. Fuji liked her, at least, and always thought it was touching that she even spent time with the team outside of tennis club practices, participating in bowling tournaments and beach volleyball, among other things.
He was going to miss her, he suspected, after he graduated.
